It's not a loss but the United States' World Cup result against Portugal is still a heartbreaker.  Cristiano Ronaldo fed a cross to the head of Silvestre Varela for a goal with seconds to spare in extra time as Portugal secured a 2-2 draw with the U.S.  The U.S. had been given the lead off a goal from Clint Dempsey in the 81st minute.  Jermaine Jones scored the equalizer for the United States in the 64th minute after Portugal's Nani scored early in the match.

The U.S. is now tied atop Group G with Germany with four points.  The teams meet Thursday in the final match of the group round, while Ghana and Portugal play at the same time.  A win or draw for the Americans would be enough to advance to the knockout round.
