12 Russians Indicted For Hacking Democrats In Lead-Up To 2016 Election

Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein

Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein announced that 12 Russian intelligence officers were indicted by Special Counsel Robert Mueller for allegedly hacking the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, the Democratic National Committee, and the Hillary Clinton campaign in the lead-up to the 2016 presidential election. The 12 individuals are facing an 11-count indictment which includes charges of conspiracy, aggravated identity theft, and money laundering.

Rosenstein said Russia's GRU military intelligence service stole and released documents after using malicious computer codes to compromise the Democrats' computer systems. He explained that the intelligence officers took the documents and leaked them using the aliases of Guccifer 2.0 and DCLeaks.

Rosenstein said that federal prosecutors believe that the Russian hackers worked with Americans, but added that there was no evidence that the Americans realized they were coordinating with Russian intelligence officers.
