Hillsborough Schools Avoid State Takeover

TAMPA -- The Hillsborough school district will avoid a state takeover.

Superintendent Addison Davis persuaded the state to release an advance grant of $101 million in ESSER funds... emergency money intended to assist local school districts. That, along with cost cutting measures, is expected to close the district's budget map.

"This will allow us to transfer COVID expense money, transfer general funds, and allow us to maintain a three percent (reserve fund)", Davis said. He says there will be furlough days for himself and other top members of his team, but no district administrators will be furloughed. There are 95 school district employees subject to layoff, and Davis says he's working to find them positions in the district.

14.4 million dollars of the 101 million lump sum will go to charter schools as required by state law, and the district will continue to maintain "mitigation strategies" to improve the system's financial footing.

The school board will meet tomorrow (Tuesday) to finalize the financial plan. It will form a financial recovery council to deal with ongoing money issues.
