Time for Floridians to protect sensitive plants from frigid temps

The coldest weather in at least several years is moving into Florida this weekend. Cold sensitive plants will need to be brought in or covered. Teresa Watkins- the host of the Florida News Network's Better Lawns and Gardens program- isn't as worried about Central and North Florida where residents are more used to occasional cold snaps--

"But if they have tropical plants, or South Florida, this is going to be brutal," Watkins says. "It just depends on how long it lasts and they're saying we should have three nights of freezing through Monday so I'm pretty concerned about South Florida."

What's most vulnerable to the cold?

"Tropical plants- palm trees- and your herbaceous plants. They may not be able to take underneath 45-50 degrees. They may see some cold damage depending on how long it lasts."

Along with palm tree varieties, Watkins worries about tropical plants like crotons and also hibiscus.
