Dexter & Mayzie

When & what breed of dog should we buy next?

Our pups, Dexter & Mayzie are getting old!  Dexter is a Bullmastiff that weighs about 150lbs and is 10 years old.  All of the websites & books you read about this breed say their life expectancy is 8-10 years.  I bought Dexter 10 years ago for my wife for Valentine's Day.  He has been the best dog I have ever owned.  Mayzie is a Mini Dachshund that weighs about 10lbs and is 14.5 years old.  Her life expectancy is 12-16 years.  Mayzie was a Christmas present to our kids and has been ruling Dexter since day one. They are the Rocky & Bullwinkle of the dog world.

As sad as it is, Tori & I know that they aren't going to live forever.  My in-laws just dealt with this very difficult situation.  They fought with the idea of not owning a dog at all after the death, Lexi.  My father-in-law (the softy of the bunch) demanded that we didn't get him another dog.  He didn't think it was the best thing for him at the time, emotionally.  However, his wife isn't much of a listener and chose to get him another dog anyway.  A Yorkshire Terrier to which they aptly named "Yorkie." Lol.  Although at first he was a little perturbed, he soon fell in love with that little fellow.  So, Tori and I are wondering, do we get another dog after these guys have left quite a legacy?  Only time will tell.  What do you guys think?

Here are some pictures we took over the years.  They really are great companions!
