Delta Apologizes For Tieing Woman to Wheelchair

Delta Airlines apologized to a passenger and offered her 20,000 SkyMiles after an employee used a "dirty blanket" to secure her a wheelchair. Maria Saliagas was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis five years ago and requires a special wheelchair with straps to help her sit upright. She hasn't let the degenerative disease stop her from traveling to Europe with her husband once every year.

According to WSB-TV, she has never had an issue with Delta until this year. Her son said that he worked with the airline to ensure that when his mother landed in Amsterdam the airline would have the proper wheelchair, which included special straps that help keep her from falling out of the chair. Unfortunately, when she arrived the airline did not have the correct wheelchair.

Once she landed, an unidentified employee decided to improvise and used someone else's blanket to tie her to a regular wheelchair. Her son said that it was tied so tight that his mother "has bruise marks on part of her arm."

“They took a dirty blanket and tied her forcefully with it and she has bruise marks on part of her arm because it was so tight and she started crying.”

The family complained to Delta and the airline apologized and offered them 20,000 SkyMiles but they said that was not enough. They want the airline to change their policies to prevent other people from being treated the same way Maria was.
