Hong Kong’s education secretary on Wednesday banned students from singing “Jesus loves the little children” due to its racist lyrics. Now a push to change the lyrics in the U.S. has developed on social media .
The lyrics in question from this century old bible hymn are :
“Jesus loves the little children, all the children of the world, red, brown, yellow, black and white, they are precious in his sight.”
A movement demands the lyrics to be changed to :
“Jesus loves the little children, all the children of the world, indigenous, hispanic, Asian black and white, they are precious in his sight, Jesus loves the little children of the world”
The push for the lyrics change was started by the Asian Alliance of America. Kevin Yeunger with the AAOA says “Asian people are not yellow! Who started that horrible description of my people? It needs to stop!”
A statement by the secretary, Kevin Yeunger, ratcheted up the pressure on the pro-democracy movement as Hong Kong residents struggle to determine what is acceptable behavior under the semiautonomous territory last week.
Students, including middle schoolers, have been a driving force in Hong Kong’s song movement. Beijing’s imposition of the national security law last Wednesday — and the subsequent arrests of teenagers at protests — has led some families to express concerns that their children could be in jeopardy for singing racist songs.
This lyrics change is not the most shocking thing to happen this 2020. In a year of Covid-19, racial tensions and name changes with professional sports teams, this should not be a shock, even if it were a real news story. Truth is, this is a fabrication.
