The Boston Red Sox (33-36) defeated the Tampa Bay Rays (36-31) 3-1 on Tuesday night at Fenway Park to even the three-game series between division rivals at one-game apiece.
Red Sox rookie Roman Anthony, making his second MLB appearance after debuting on Monday night, had his first career hit in the first - a two-run double that gave Boston an early 1-0 lead. In the fifth inning Yandy Diaz hit a RBI single to pull within 2-1, but the Red Sox got a solo homer from Trevor Story in the sixth to make it 3-1 and give Boston some insurance.
Ryan Pepiot (3-6, 3.31) allowed three earned runs on five hits while striking out nine and walking two in his five and two-third innings of work. The Rays were unable to figure out Lucas Giolito (2-1, 5.45) who allowed just one unearned run on three hits in his six innings of work.
The Rays and Red Sox will now meet in the rubber game of the three-game series coming up on Wednesday night. Zack Littell (6-5, 3.68) is scheduled to start for the Rays, and face Walker Buehler (4-4, 5.18) for the Red Sox. First pitch Wednesday is scheduled for 7:10 PM - pregame coverage begins with Ronnie Lane hosting the Inside Pitch at 6:00 PM on 95.3 WDAE & AM 620, your Home of Rays Baseball.
