The Tampa Bay Rays (95-60) defeated the Boston Red Sox (84-72) 5-1 on Sunday afternoon to win the three-game series against their divisional rivals. It was the last regular season series at Tropicana Field for Tampa Bay, who went 8-1 in the final nine-game homestand in St. Petersburg.
The Rays got four runs in the first thanks to a two-run double from Jonny DeLuca and a two-run single from Chandler Simpson. Griffin Jax (8-10, 3.52) pitched five shutout innings in which he allowed three hits while striking out five and walking two to get the win.
The Rays are now off on Monday and are travelling to New York to begin a huge four-game series with the Yankees on Monday. The Rays will try to win the AL East in that series within the division. It begins with a double-header on Tuesday - the first game is scheduled for a 1:05 PM first pitch, with the second game scheduled for a 7:05 PM first pitch.
