NBC News has fired Matt Lauer after receiving what NBC News President Andrew Lack called in a memo "a detailed complaint from a colleague about inappropriate sexual behavior in the workplace."

Lauer's Today show co-host Savannah Guthrie revealed the news on Wednesday morning's show, adding that she was heartbroken for Lauer, whom she called her "dear, dear friend," but also for the woman who filed the complaint against him.  

Lauer had been co-anchor of Today for almost 21 years. He first took on the role on January 6, 1997.
