Monday night's Met Gala saw some of the most stunning looks from celebrities, marking the return of "fashion's biggest night" following last year's cancellation. Among those who took to the red carpet to display their designer looks was Kid Cudi, who sported a $1.6 million "space chain."
The piece was designed by Ben Baller and KAWS, and is a one-of-a-kind work of art inspired by KAWS' Holiday Space figure. With more than 24,000 clarity E color diamonds and over a kilo in 18k rose gold, the chain and pendant, titled SPACE, is a museum-quality work of art.
Baller wound up shutting down his entire factory for three months while he focused on completing the piece. "This is the most detailed and intricate piece of jewelry I've ever created in my entire career," Baller said of SPACE.
The necklace includes a secret compartment for storage, and was a fitting statement for the Man On the Moon creator. Kudi's look was completed with an outfit designed by Louis Vuitton and makeup done by Renny Vasquez in collaboration with Pat McGrath.
The Met Gala is far from the "Day 'N' Nite" rapper's first nod to grunge and emo within his own look and style. During his Saturday Night Live appearance last April, Kudi honored the late Nirvana frontman and grunge legend, Kurt Cobain. Sporting an olive green cardigan that looked similar to what Cobain wore during his 1993 MTV Unplugged performance, then changing into a floral dress that acted as a nod to what Cobain wore on the cover of Britain's now-defunct The Face magazine in 1993, Kudi's tribute was received as a PSA on suicide prevention.
Kudi is also set to appear in the upcoming Adam McKay film, Don't Look Up. The star-studded cast includes Meryl Streep, Leonardo DiCaprio, Jennifer Lawrence, Timothée Chalamet, Jonah Hill, and Ariana Grande. A teaser of the film saw Kudi and Grande snuggling up as they portrayed their characters, and the two have also recorded a new song for the feature. Don't Look Up will arrive in select theaters on December 10, with the film landing on Netflix on December 24.
