LISTEN: Shopping Small Boosts Florida Small Business

TALLAHASSEE -- Small Business Saturday is this weekend, and the Florida leader of a group that represents them hopes many Floridians will spend a lot of money with small retailers, restaurants and other businesses.

The Small Business Administration, one of the sponsors of Small Business Saturday along with American Express, says that 99.8 percent of Florida businesses are small businesses. Bill Herrle, Florida executive director of the National Federation of Independent Business, says they're reliable contributors to the state's sales tax coffers. Herrle adds that 67 percent of the money spent at small businesses stays in the community.

American Express launched Small Business Saturday nationwide in 2010. Last year, consumers across the U.S. spent nearly $20 billion with small businesses.
