Students, School Board Members Rally Against Amendment 1 in Miami

Students and school board members are converging on the Miami-Dade County School Board Administration Building Wednesday morning to oppose Amendment 1 which would politicize school board elections.

School Board Member Luisa Santas, Florida Student Power Network, Engage Miami and the Dade Teachers Union are all participating in the "No on One" rally today.

Under current Florida law, when prospective school board members appeared on ballots they did not appear with a political affiliation. If Amendment 1 is passed, that would change.

Amendment 1 would overturn a law that ensures school board races in the state of Florida are nonpartisan.

For the past 25 elections no school board candidate has been listed as democrat or republican on the ballot. Times have changed and education has become political in Florida.

If Amendment 1 passes, NPA voters would have to change their registration to Republican or Democrat in order to vote in a school board primary election.
