FLORIDA - Florida's Attorney General, James Uthmeier, has launched a criminal investigation into social media influencers Andrew and Tristan Tate following their recent arrival in the state.
The Tate brothers, known for their controversial online presence, were arrested in Romania in December 2022 on allegations of human trafficking, rape, and forming a criminal gang to exploit women.
After a period under Romanian judicial control, they were permitted to leave the country and arrived in Florida last week.
Attorney General Uthmeier confirmed on Tuesday that his office has commenced a criminal investigation into the brothers.
State investigators have been directed to execute search warrants and issue subpoenas as part of this probe.
Governor Ron DeSantis expressed strong disapproval of the Tates' presence in Florida, stating they are "not welcome" in the state.
He emphasized Florida's zero-tolerance stance on human trafficking and violence against women.
In response, Andrew Tate criticized Governor DeSantis' remarks, asserting his innocence and highlighting that he has not been convicted of any crime.
He questioned the presumption of innocence, stating on The PBD Podcast, "Isn't the whole point of democracy, innocent until proven guilty? I've yet to even have a trial, let alone a conviction."
Despite their departure, Romanian authorities have indicated that the Tates remain under investigation and are required to return for judicial proceedings in March.
The Florida Attorney General's office has not disclosed further details about the ongoing investigation as of Tuesday evening.
Attorney General Uthmeier emphasized that the state will utilize all legal tools at its disposal to hold the brothers accountable for any unlawful activities conducted within Florida's jurisdiction.
