Miami, FL - A Sunday evening flight from Miami to North Carolina ended in panic and injury after severe turbulence allegedly rocked the aircraft shortly before landing.
American Airlines Flight 1286 departed from Miami International Airport bound for Raleigh Durham International Airport.
As the plane approached its destination around 11:30 p.m., it reportedly encountered sudden and violent turbulence while the seat belt sign was on.
Despite the jarring incident, the aircraft landed safely without mechanical issues.
Emergency responders were waiting at the gate.
According to statements from airport officials and airline representatives, three flight attendants and two passengers were taken to a local hospital for evaluation.
All five were later released after being treated for minor injuries.
Passengers described the event as terrifying.
Several said it felt like a sharp drop, with belongings flying through the air.
One passenger claimed lightning may have been a factor, though that has not been officially confirmed.
Some travelers expressed frustration over a lack of immediate communication from the flight crew during the incident, saying it added to the chaos onboard.
American Airlines issued a public statement thanking both passengers and crew for their composure.
The airline also reiterated that safety is its top priority and confirmed that the seat belt sign was active at the time.
The Federal Aviation Administration has opened a review to better understand what caused the severe midair turbulence and whether weather patterns or flight path changes played a role.
