Miami, FL - The Miami Dolphins have announced that veteran running back Alexander Mattison has been placed on injured reserve after sustaining a neck injury in a preseason game against the Chicago Bears.

The injury occurred in the fourth quarter when Mattison was tackled on a 21-yard reception and landed awkwardly on his head.

Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel stated that Mattison experienced soreness in his neck and shoulder after the play.

Following the injury, Mattison was taken to a hospital and underwent surgery that will end his 2025 season, according to ESPN reports.

Mattison joined the Dolphins on a one-year contract in March, brought in to add depth to the running back position.

He had shown strong performance during training camp, impressing coaches with his power running style and ability to gain yards after contact.

To compensate for Mattison’s absence, Miami signed veteran running backs Mike Boone and Aaron Shampklin on Monday to compete for playing time behind starter De'Von Achane and second-year running back Jaylen Wright.

Rookie Ollie Gordon II may also see increased playing time; he performed well during Sunday’s preseason game, recording eight carries for 33 yards and a touchdown, plus a 39-yard catch.

Mattison spent the first five seasons of his NFL career with the Minnesota Vikings, rushing for 2,370 yards with an average of 4.1 yards per carry and 11 touchdowns.

Last season, he played for the Las Vegas Raiders, compiling 420 yards and four touchdowns.
