Sunny Isles Beach, FL - A hammerhead shark became stranded in shallow waters near Newport Pier in Sunny Isles Beach on Monday afternoon, prompting a response from local lifeguards.

Sunny Isles Beach Police officials said the shark, estimated to be six to seven feet long, was initially caught by a group of children fishing from the pier.

The children brought the shark to shore and released it into the surf, but it became stranded and was unable to swim back into deeper water.

Ocean Rescue lifeguards quickly responded to the situation, clearing swimmers from the area to ensure safety.

Using a rescue ski and rope, the lifeguards guided the shark back beyond the pier, where it was last seen swimming away on its own.

Police confirmed that the shark appeared unharmed after the rescue.

“This type of response demonstrates the Ocean Rescue team’s training in marine wildlife emergencies,” officials said.

Hammerhead sharks are not commonly found near shorelines, and encounters with large marine species can be dangerous without proper handling.

Authorities emphasize the importance of allowing trained personnel to manage such incidents to protect both people and wildlife.

The rescue was witnessed by bystanders, highlighting the presence of large marine animals near Florida beaches and the role of lifeguards in responding to unusual situations.

Sunny Isles Beach Police shared updates of the incident on social media, noting the quick response and successful return of the shark to deeper waters.
