Lake Buena Vista, FL - Disney’s Animal Kingdom is mourning the loss of one of its most iconic residents, Gino, a 44-year-old western lowland gorilla who spent nearly three decades at the park.

Gino, who would have celebrated his 45th birthday this December, was a cornerstone of the park’s animal care and conservation programs.

The gorilla fathered 14 offspring and contributed to global research efforts aimed at protecting and preserving his species.

Dr. Mark Penning, Disney’s vice president of animals, science, and environment, shared the news on Instagram, highlighting Gino’s remarkable impact on both his gorilla family and the thousands of visitors who encountered him.

“Gino leaves behind an incredible legacy – 14 offspring, global contributions to gorilla care and conservation, and the lasting memories of every cast member and guest he inspired,” Penning wrote.

Gino’s presence at Disney’s Animal Kingdom spanned nearly 30 years, during which he became a beloved figure for park visitors and a key part of the zoo’s educational and conservation initiatives.

His life exemplified the park’s dedication to the care and study of endangered species.

“Gino’s story will live on in the future of his species and in the hearts of all who knew and loved him,” Penning added. “Thank you, Gino. You will always be part of our family.”

Disney officials have stated that Gino’s legacy will continue through his offspring and the ongoing conservation work supported by the park, ensuring that his influence on gorilla care and education endures for generations to come.
