FLORIDA - Former President Donald Trump has officially endorsed Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier for the 2026 election, signaling support for a close ally of Governor Ron DeSantis.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump called Uthmeier a “Strong Conservative Fighter and Prosecutor” and said he has his “Complete and Total Endorsement.”
Uthmeier was appointed Florida attorney general in February 2025 after Governor DeSantis named Ashley Moody to the U.S. Senate seat previously held by Marco Rubio.
Before his appointment, Uthmeier served as DeSantis’ campaign manager during his 2024 presidential bid and as his chief of staff.
During the campaign, Uthmeier had been critical of Trump, raising questions about whether Trump would endorse him in the future.
In addition to his role as attorney general, Uthmeier helped establish the Alligator Alcatraz immigration detention center in the Everglades, which opened in July 2025 with the capacity to house up to 5,000 detainees.
The facility has faced legal challenges regarding environmental compliance and detainee rights.
Uthmeier was also involved in a controversial real estate transfer in Miami, moving a 2.6-acre parcel from the state to the Trump Presidential Library Foundation.
The property, valued at over $67 million and near the historic Freedom Tower, has drawn legal scrutiny over the speed and transparency of the transaction.
Trump’s endorsement reduces speculation about a divisive primary battle between Trump-aligned and DeSantis-aligned factions in Florida’s 2026 elections.
Uthmeier responded by thanking Trump and stating that he will continue to fight on behalf of Floridians and the American people.
