#SaveOurSolar
Solar is a clean renewable energy source that helps reduce our carbon footprint and the state of Florida should be encouraging rooftop solar in the Sunshine State. Yet, just 1% of Florida homeowners have rooftop solar panels. The problem is that they are not cheap. However, if you can invest in the system, you can use the money you save on your power bill to pay off the system until the time when you eventually own them free and clear. Plus, the benefit is from the day they start producing power on your home, you are reducing your carbon footprint.
Florida power companies however are supporting 2 bills in the Florida Legislature, HB 741 & SB 1024 which would reduce the amount of money that homeowners would receive for the excess power that they sell back to the power companies. This would make rooftop solar more expensive for Florida homeowners, making going solar more difficult for middle and lower income families. (See FPL-backed solar change could make panels less attractive to low-, middle-income families, critics say Orlando Sentinel 2/11/22 and Solar advocates say FPL wants to kill their industry Orlando Sentinel 2/13/22)
In my opinion, these bills are strictly designed to increase the profits for the Florida power companies at a cost of charging the Florida solar home owner more which would have a devastating effect on the industry, hurt Florida solar companies, cost Florida jobs and slow the growth of solar production in the Sunshine State.
In fact, according to an Orlando Sentinel investigation, Florida Power & Light not only supports these bills, it has also put money behind supporting them,
The Florida House and Senate are voting on these bills this week. Let your representatives now how you feel. Tell them NOT to support HB 741 & SB 1024.
